OVERVIEW

In order to orient the students in core engineering principles with a strong background on biotechnological processes and also towards innovation and research by providing adequate exposure to research within the campus, The department offers B.Tech, M.Phil, M.S. and Ph.D. programme in Biotechnology and Biological Sciences The Department has well-equipped industrial standard laboratories in the areas of life science and chemical engineering.

The Biotechnology degree programme aims to provide students with a broad training and education in biotechnology encompassing the science, business, legal, social and ethical aspects. Learning is multidisciplinary, innovative and emphasizes hands-on learning of the basic principles and techniques. The required core courses are designed to cover the broad aspects of biotechnology and the elective courses are dependent on the student’s particular interest or area of specialization. Intensive laboratory courses in molecular biology techniques and bioprocess techniques are part of the core requirements.

A series of lectures and seminars from leading scientists, academic and industry mentors, expose students to the cutting edge science and entrepreneurship in biotechnology. Team work and communication skills are encouraged through the various courses and through the required industry internship and research projects. Students are also motivated to participate in workshops, conferences, Symposium in national and international levels to achieve exposure in core research areas.

The course familiarizes the students with the basic principles and techniques in molecular biology research:
DNA purification, restriction analysis, gel electrophoresis, nucleic acid probe labeling techniques, nucleic acid blotting and hybridization, cloning, sequencing, PCR amplification,protein immunodetection,fermentation and bioseperation techniques.
