Periyar Maniammai Institute of Science & Technology (Deemed to be University) is one of a few institutions (from the inception) that formed the institution’s Innovation Council under the Ministry of Education (formerly under MHRD & AICTE).
In PMIST, a separate entity, namely the Periyar Technology Business Incubator (Section 8 company Periyar TBI; www.periyartbi.org), has been functioning with a focus on innovation, IPR, start-ups, and entrepreneurship. Periyar TBI's efforts helped PMIST to develop an innovative and entrepreneurial culture among the students and faculty members. The Institution Innovation Council at PMIST worked in tandem with Periyar TBI and other external experts (innovators and entrepreneurs) to achieve the goal set by the Ministry of Education, which resulted in conferring with the following stars and appreciation letters.

Ministry of Education (MoE), Govt. of India has established 'MoE's Innovation Cell (MIC)' to systematically foster the culture of Innovation among all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The primary mandate of MIC is to encourage, inspire and nurture young students by supporting them to work with new ideas and transform them into prototypes while they are in formative stages.

Function of Institution Innovation Council (IIC) at PMIST
- To conduct various Innovation, IPR and entrepreneurship-related programmes.
- To Identify and share success stories of Entrepreneurs.
- To organize periodic Webinars/workshops/Poster Presentations and interactions with entrepreneurs and create a linkage for student innovators.
- Creating an Institution's Innovation web page to highlight innovative projects carried out by the faculty and students.
- Conducting Hackathons, idea competition etc. with the linkage with industries.
